Sony FX5 vs Canon C50: sensor and image quality

The Canon C50 has the higher resolution sensor, the Sony FX5 has the faster one. That single sentence decides most rental choices between these two cameras.

The C50 captures 7K and doubles as a 32-megapixel stills camera. For commercial work where editors punch in, stabilise in post or deliver photos and video from one body, that resolution is a real advantage.

The FX5 counters with a stacked sensor that reads out fast enough to make rolling shutter irrelevant. Whip pans, strobes and fast subjects stay straight. The C50’s conventional sensor cannot match that readout speed.

Which is better in low light, the FX5 or the C50?

The Sony FX5 is clearly better in low light thanks to three base ISOs: 800, 4000 and 12800. The C50 offers 800 and 6400 in Canon Log 2, roughly two stops behind the FX5’s top base.

In practice: wedding receptions, concerts and night exteriors that push the C50 into noise stay clean on the FX5. That native 12800 base is the single biggest reason event shooters pick the Sony.

Open gate: 5K vs 7K

Both cameras record open gate using the sensor’s full 3:2 height, but the C50 does it at 7K against the FX5’s 5K. If your delivery list includes 16:9, 9:16 vertical and 4:5 from one take, both work. The C50 simply leaves more crop room, and that is its strongest single argument.

Sony FX5 vs Canon C50: RAW and workflow

The FX5 records deeper RAW files internally: 16-bit X-OCN versus the C50’s 12-bit Cinema RAW Light. X-OCN is the same file family as Sony’s VENICE and BURANO, grades generously and stays manageable in size.

Cinema RAW Light is proven and edits well. For most branded content the 12 vs 16-bit difference is academic. For heavy grading and VFX pulls it is not, and colourists will tell you which file they prefer.

Sony FX5 vs Canon C50: autofocus and stabilisation

Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF II is still the most trusted autofocus in this class, especially among wedding shooters. Sony’s AI subject recognition tracks people, animals and birds, and in fast, chaotic light the FX5 locks on at least as quickly.

Stabilisation is not a contest. The FX5 has in-body stabilisation with an improved Dynamic Active mode. The C50 has none, only electronic stabilisation that crops the image. For handheld work without a gimbal, the FX5 wins outright.

Handling, media, batteries and ND

Three practical points renters run into:

  1. Media: the FX5 takes CFexpress Type A or SD in both slots. The C50 pairs CFexpress Type B with SD, and Type B cards cost less per gigabyte.
  2. Batteries: the C50 uses the familiar LP-E6P, the FX5 the new NP-SA100. Neither shares batteries with older bodies.
  3. ND: neither camera has built-in ND filters. Add a variable ND or mattebox to either rental, this surprises shooters on both sides.

E-mount vs RF: lenses for renters

E-mount gives renters the wider lens pool. An FX5 slots next to an FX3, FX6 or A7S III without adapters, and cine glass in E-mount is everywhere. RF glass is excellent but the native cinema selection is smaller and third-party options remain limited. EF lenses adapt well to both systems.

Which should you rent: Sony FX5 or Canon C50?

  1. Documentary and events: FX5. Third base ISO, IBIS and lighter XAVC files.
  2. Commercials and social campaigns: C50. The 7K open gate maximises reframing freedom.
  3. Weddings: either. Canon colour and AF against Sony low light and IBIS. Dark venue, take the FX5.
  4. Hybrid photo and video: C50. 32MP stills from one body replaces a second camera.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Sony FX5 full frame?

Yes. Both the Sony FX5 and the Canon C50 use full-frame sensors. The FX5 carries a 16.6MP stacked sensor built for speed, the C50 a 7K sensor of roughly 32MP built for resolution and hybrid stills work.

Does the Canon C50 have IBIS or built-in ND?

No to both. The C50 relies on electronic stabilisation, which crops the image, and on external ND filters. The Sony FX5 has real in-body stabilisation but also lacks built-in ND, so both cameras need ND in your kit.

Which is better in low light, the FX5 or the C50?

The Sony FX5. Its triple base ISO reaches a native 12800, roughly two stops beyond the C50’s second base of 6400. For receptions, concerts and night work the FX5 delivers cleaner footage.

Can the Canon C50 shoot photos?

Yes. The C50 shoots stills at around 32 megapixels, making it the stronger hybrid choice. The Sony FX5 is a dedicated video camera without a comparable stills mode.

What does it cost to rent the FX5 or C50 in the Netherlands?

At CineRentals the Sony FX5 rents for EUR 85 per day or EUR 276.25 per week. The Canon EOS C50 rents for

EUR 112.50 per day or EUR 365.63 per week. Both come as complete kits.
